On Tuesday 5th July the TV programme B is for Book was shown on BBC4. The programme was all about how children learn to read, and followed five Kingsmead children in Reception and Year 1 classes on their learning to read journey. Sam, the film's director visited Kingsmead over the course of 9 months, following the children's progress, filming in their classrooms and in their homes, as they discovered the world of reading and books.....and learnt how to read themselves.
As well as some fantastic reviews in local and national press (see below), Kingsmead received many wonderfully positive responses in emails and comments from people who had seen the film and got in touch with the school. Here are a few of them:
"I think you can be proud of your pupils and parents. And really proud of your staff. But you probably knew that. Great programme".
"What a fantastic programme! Congratulations to all your staff, children and parents for providing such an inspirational and uplifting view of early readers' learning journey. Many thanks indeed".
"What an interesting program everyone associated with your school must be so proud. I know how much hard work has gone into the success of your school. Thank you for sharing the children's success with us I enjoyed it so much"
"I have just watched the excellent program 'B is for Book' on BBC 4 and was full of admiration for your dedicated and patient staff and their success in helping children to learn to read."
"To the staff and pupils at Kingsmead School - I had the pleasure of watching the television programme today 'B is for Book' and seeing the work of your fabulous staff and pupils. As a reception teacher myself, I know how challenging it can be sometimes to get children enthused and reading. It was so wonderful watching you working in partnership together, staff, children and parents, to instill a love of learning and reading, despite the obvious barriers for some children. Hats off to you all."
"I just wanted to say a big congratulations on the BBC four film last night! It was so beautifully done and a real testament to Kingsmead’s wonderful teaching practices and commitment to creative learning."
